DISCOVER BEAUJOLAIS
FALL 2019

Beaujolais is a wine region that lies immediately south of Burgundy in eastern France. This area is planted almost entirely to the red Gamay grape, that is most often made into wine through a method called semi-carbonic maceration, which creates easy-drinking reds with kirsch, banana, and blueberry flavors typical of the method. There are three main tiers of production in the region: basic Beaujolais wines that are light and fruity, Beaujolais-Villages wines that achieve slightly higher ripeness and quality levels, and Beaujolais ‘Cru’ wines which represent the highest tier of quality and longevity. The region is known for producers who have a strong interest in sustainable and organic viticulture, and low intervention winemaking. It is also known for one other style of wine, Beaujolais Nouveau…

Beaujolais Nouveau is a style of wine formally established in France in 1951; it is one of few wine styles whose bottles are released in the same year its grapes were picked. Red Gamay grapes are made into Nouveau wine through a process called Carbonic Maceration – this process produces a very fruity, soft, aromatic wine with flavors of fresh red fruit, and sometimes bananas or bubble gum. It is always best when consumed young and at cool temperatures. Beaujolais producers very successfully publicized the Nouveau style in the latter half of the last century, making Beaujolais Nouveau and the catchphrase “Beaujolais Nouveau Est Arrivé!” known throughout the bistros of Paris and the world. In 1985, Beaujolais Nouveau Day was decreed to be the third Thursday of November, forbidding the wine’s release before that date, and thereby making it a holiday staple!
